Carbon Offsetting

Do you know the size of your carbon footprint? How much carbon do you generate living at home or when you fly or drive on holiday?

Households who use an STT energy efficient mud stove in the villages in the Dodoma region of Tanzania reduce their carbon footprint by one tonne a year. This is because households using the STT energy efficient stove use about half the amount of wood each year that they did when cooking on a three stone fire. Thus, instead of using approximately two tonnes of wood a year, they use only one tonne. This means that in the course of one year of STT’s work in the Dodoma region, where the plan is to build 3,000 stoves, approximately 3,000 less tonnes of carbon will be produced. All the stoves built are registered on STT’s data base. In addition the stoves are monitored regularly by our STT team to ensure that they are being used regularly.

You can now help STT by offsetting your carbon through Carbon Accountable

STT has now entered into a contract with Carbon Accountable (CA), a broker who sells carbon off-sets on the open market. Carbon Accountable’s aim is to help as many individuals, families, businesses and organisations as possible take concrete steps to lower their carbon emissions. Carbon Credits sold through Carbon Accountable contribute to sustainable development in the country where the projects are located.

STT has made 1,000 tonnes of the carbon saved in the four villages of Membe, Chamwino, Nzuguni and Nzali available for sale by CA. These 1,000 tonnes will be sold as carbon offsets by CA. For every tonne of carbon offset that is sold, CA will give STT 6 sterling pounds.  Because STT is a charity, CA are not charging any overhead so all the money received will come to STT. It will then be reinvested in STT’s Domestic Energy Programme.
